Mr. Lowy joined the Helicos Board of Directors in November 2007 and was appointment CEO in December 2008. He has more than 30 years of experience managing and growing technology based global businesses.
As president and CEO of Fisher Biosciences, a division of Fisher Scientific, Mr. Lowy was responsible for 14 business units with more than 5,000 employees in 56 locations in 100 countries around the world. Before joining Fisher Biosciences, Mr. Lowy was president of Global Connectivity Solutions for ADC Telecommunications. He also served as president and Chief Operating Officer at the KRONE Group where he was responsible for all facets of this global business unit. Mr. Lowy spent the first 15 years of his career in operations, technology and general management positions at GE Medical Systems where he was intimately involved with the development and commercialization of Computerized Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Systems. Mr. Lowy earned his Master of Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin and a bachelor's of science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of New Hampshire.
Mr. Steve Lombardi
President
Mr. Lombardi joined Helicos in June 2006. He has over 27 years of commercial biotechnology experience, as a researcher and in various business management and executive positions. Prior to joining Helicos, he was Senior Vice President at Affymetrix, serving in executive positions in Corporate Development, Product Development and Research and Corporate Marketing. Before Affymetrix, Mr. Lombardi worked for 16 years at Applied Biosystems in various business roles, first as a marketing manager and later as a senior executive.
From 1989 to 1998, Mr. Lombardi led the formation of the company's DNA sequencing and genetic analysis business, the products of which formed the technological basis of the worldwide Human Genome Project. He was also involved in the formation of Celera within the broader Applera corporate structure. Prior to joining Applied Biosystems, Mr. Lombardi spent 8+ years as a nucleic acids chemist focused on the development of novel approaches to DNA synthesis. He earned his BA in Biology from Merrimack College.
Mr. Jeffrey R. Moore
Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
Mr. Moore joined Helicos in August 2009, bringing over 20 years of financial experience in life science technology and Big 4 accounting. He has a demonstrated track record of success in guiding leading edge strategic and operational initiatives that directly impact top line and bottom line results.
Previously, Mr. Moore was managing member and founder of Fiske Pond Advisors LLC, a financial advisory services firm, since 2008. Mr. Moore served as Chief Financial Officer of Affinova, Inc., a privately-held innovation technology company, from 2004 to 2008 and Vice President of Finance at Flagship Ventures from 2000 to 2006. He served as the Director of Business Analysis and Planning at Celera Genomics, the first biotechnology firm to sequence the human genome, from 1998 to 1999. Prior to Celera, Mr. Moore was Vice President of Treasury Operations at a public life science technology company, PerSeptive Biosystems.
Mr. Moore received his BS degree from Cornell University and MBA from Vanderbilt University.
Dr. J. William Efcavitch
Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer
Dr. Efcavitch joined Helicos in October 2004. He previously worked for Applied Biosystems as a senior level R&D and Business professional for over 20 years, contributing significantly to the development of many key instrument and reagent products during that time. Representative examples of the projects under his management include several models of DNA synthesizers, and several generations of DNA sequencers including the sequencer used to generate the bulk of the data for the Human Genome Project. His last position was as the business manager for a novel microarray product line developed by AB.
Prior to Applied Biosystems, he was a postdoctoral associate with Dr. Marvin Caruthers in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Colorado.
Dr. Efcavitch received a BA in Chemistry from La Salle University, and a PhD in Biochemistry from Ohio University. He has had over 10 publications and 15 issued or submitted patents.
Mr. Marc S. Levine
Senior Vice President, Product Development
Mr. Levine joined Helicos in June 2008. He has over 27 years of experience in developing and commercializing complex capital equipment for the semiconductor industry, serving most recently as Senior Vice President of Product Development for Axcelis Technologies. Prior to Axcelis he spent 25 years at Teradyne, a semiconductor test equipment company, serving in executive positions in Engineering, Enabling Technology, General Management, Sales and Customer Service.
While at Teradyne, Mr. Levine provided leadership in the development, marketing, and manufacturing of multiple new platform products. In the mid 90's he created an internal start up venture within the company to develop an innovative breakthrough product using disruptive technology. As the general manager he built the venture into a new division of the company which
achieved over $200M in annual revenue three years after product introduction.
Mr. Levine received a B.S. in Computer Science and Engineering from M.I.T. and an M.S. in Computer Engineering from Stanford University.
Dr. Patrice M. Milos
Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer
Dr. Milos joined Helicos in June 2007. Her expertise and extensive knowledge in the life sciences advances the company's efforts to develop innovative and breakthrough technology. She previously served as Executive Director at Pfizer Global Research and Development, where she was responsible for leadership, strategic alignment and execution of the scientific disciplines of pharmacogenomics, proteomics, metabonomics and RNA profiling across the Pfizer portfolio from early discovery into the marketplace. She joined Pfizer in 1993 and held numerous research positions of increasing responsibility focusing on Cardiovascular and Metabolic Disease, Pharmacogenomics, DNA Sequencing, Biomarkers and Molecular Sciences.
Dr. Milos serves on the National Advisory Council for Human Genome Research and was pivotal in the establishment and oversight of key Pfizer strategic investments in the genomics area, most notably, the Genetic Association Information Network. She also sits on several editorial boards for journals and has published and presented extensively in the genomics area. Dr. Milos conducted post-doctoral fellowships at Brown University and Harvard University. She earned her MS and PhD degrees at Rensselear Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY and received her BA from The College of Saint Rose in Albany, NY.
Mr. Alan Sherr
Vice President, Intellectual Property
Mr. Sherr joined Helicos in January 2008. He brings over 30 years of legal experience to the company, serving most recently as Vice President and Chief Counsel for Licensing for Affymetrix, Inc. Prior to joining Affymetrix, Mr. Sherr was a patent attorney at Wolf, Greenfield & Sacks. He also was Director of Economic Security Studies at the Thomas J. Watson Institute for International Studies at Brown University, Associate Director at the Center for Foreign Policy Development at Brown University, and Research Fellow at the Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard University. He was a founder and president of the Lawyers Alliance for Nuclear Arms Control. Mr. Sherr was an Assistant Attorney General of Massachusetts and General Counsel of the Massachusetts Executive Office of Human Services.
Mr. Sherr received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, a M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, and a J.D. from Boston University School of Law where he was Editor-in-Chief of the Law Review. He clerked for Justice Paul Liacos of the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts.
Mr. Mark C. Solakian
Vice President and General Counsel
Mr. Solakian joined Helicos in April 2007. He brings over 15 years of legal experience to the company, serving most recently as Vice President and Chief Corporate Counsel for Affymetrix, Inc., a publicly traded biotechnology company, where he managed a team of attorneys responsible for all corporate legal affairs including securities laws and corporate governance matters, strategic alliances and collaborations, acquisitions and corporate finance transactions. Prior to joining Affymetrix, Mr. Solakian was an attorney at Goodwin Procter LLP where his practice included substantial experience in venture capital private placements and public offerings, public and private mergers and acquisitions, and advising public companies on SEC reporting and other general corporate matters.
Mr. Solakian received his AB from Harvard College and JD from Boston College Law School. While at Boston College Law School, he was Executive Editor for the Boston College Law Review.
